A galley is a type of ship that is propelled mainly by rowing. Suited to shorter journeys in places of changeable local wind, and multiple stops, such as around the Adriatic or Aegean seas, they were highly maneuverable. The oarsmen would rest when the wind was favorable or they could supplement weaker winds and even propel the boat against the wind. The ability to propel the galley with oars in this way meant that it could take the most direct route and there was no need for tacking. One can imagine a visit from a few Venetian officials who would have been brought to port by a team of forty or so oarsmen. The galley was the motorized transport of the Venetian era and Venice appears to have been the last significant power to have used them, including their cannoned variants. They appear to have been abandoned by the other European powers by the 17th century.
