The city of Venice in Italy, was previously an independent Republic (Venetian Italian: Repùblica de Venèsia) with an empire on the Adriatic sea that encompassed today’s coastal Croatia. Officially, in Venetian Italian it was called, Serenìsima Repùblica Vèneta, the ‘most serene Republic of Venice’. It lasted from 697 to 1797.
